American studies at OSU-Tulsa offers a systematic understanding of the culture and society of the United States of America from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students will develop a thorough understanding of culture—the shared system of beliefs, behaviors, symbols and material objects through which Americans give meaning to their lives. They will gain a rich understanding of social and cultural practices and beliefs that may differ from their own. The American studies curriculum is broad and flexible, with an array of courses in disciplines such as history, English, political science, sociology and gender/women's studies. Small, discussion-based classes allow students to connect with their teachers and peers. In addition to emphasizing liberal arts education, courses in the major develop skills in writing and analysis and help students recognize connections among diverse people and ideas. The best preparation for the program is to complete challenging high school and/or community college courses that emphasize cultural awareness, critical thinking and writing. Career Options Unlike most undergraduate degrees, American studies is not geared to prepare students for a single occupation.
