Information Literacy Instruction at the Oklahoma State University Tulsa Library
Mission:
Library and Information Literacy Instruction will foster good
information-seeking behavior in a climate of life-long learning. Students will
learn basic and intermediate skills and concepts of Information Literacy
combined with the ability to evaluate and complete the entire information
seeking process in an advanced academic library environment.
Goals and Objectives (individual objectives to be stated under 1. – 8.)
Students will learn to:
- articulate and communicate the need for specific
information
- understand the difference between formats and access
points of information
- select the most appropriate search and retrieval
methods for various information formats
- formulate effective search strategies and refine as
needed
- locate and retrieve information from primary locations
or through alternative solutions
- analyze and evaluate information for its usefulness
and reliability
- synthesize and utilize information effectively to
apply it to specific research and project needs
- become independent competent end users of information
Concepts
Students will learn to:
- choose appropriate formats of information for their
information needs (books, journals, reference materials, statistics,
(audio-) visual materials and the World Wide Web)
- select appropriate subject journal databases
- distinguish between keyword and controlled vocabulary
searching
- gain new insights from information systems while
working with them (picking up new search terms)
- differentiate between popular and academic-scholarly
documents / resources
- recognize subject terminology and apply it as needed
- narrow / broaden search results with various search
strategies
- use intermediate search strategies, like nesting,
proximity, full text and wild card searching
- determine location and formats of information and
retrieve it (full text, citation only, alternate database(s), print,
microfiche, Interlibrary Loan, reserves, reference or circulation)
Skills
Students will learn to:
- work comfortably in the traditional and electronic OSU
Tulsa Library environment on campus as well as remotely from home or office.
- use the library home page as gateway to information,
library services, online request forms, remote access and research
assistance in a fluent way.
- activate, maintain and reset their student computer
accounts
- utilize email, downloading (with floppy discs, memory
sticks, CD burning) and printing to store and disseminate information
- use basic Windows operating system techniques to
store, forward, and convert electronic information into different file
formats
