RefWorks: Getting Started
|
|
![]()
| Library Home | Start RefWorks now |

|
Setting up accounts: Use library or computer lab PCs to set up an account for the first time. |
|
Browsers:
Internet
Explorer 6.x works better than Mozilla Firefox. Go to => Tools => Pop-Up Blocker => Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker [for this session in RefWorks] |
|
Folders:
RefWorks automatically generates folders for Last Imported references and References Not in a Folder (general holding pool). Go to "Folders" and "create new folder" or "view" / "manage" all folders. |
|
Organizing
Folders:
Create your own folders for every semester by class or topic. (optional but recommended) Your individual folders will appear in red. |
|
Folders can be sorted by a variety of criteria: publication date (descending / ascending), author, title, last modified, format and type, etc.)Open a folder (under View or Folders menu), then use the pull-down sorting menu on the upper right side. |
| Folder contents can be checkmarked and copied or moved to other folders. CAUTION: If you delete a reference from a folder it is completely deleted out of every folder….so its best to move from one folder to another instead of deleting. |
|
Important: Personal Preferences (see
image below) Go to "Tools" =>
"Customize" It is highly recommended to set personal import preferences to Import Option = Electronic (see image below). [Most journal article citations at OSU Tulsa come from electronic versions of journals and databases]. |
| Set Import Options to your preferred citation style. |
| Set Start Up Options to preferred folder and sort by "author / journal / last modified," etc. |
| Set Import Options to "Electronic". |
|
Import /
Export Your Citations: Some databases (Ebsco, Proquest, CSA) will directly export there data into RefWorks—each works a bit differently though. Open your RefWorks account first, do your search in your database and then export (to RefWorks or a specific folder) the selected / marked citations from a database. |
| When Importing generic citations always save data files with citations as a Text File *.txt (see more info below). Importing into RefWorks requires that you select appropriate “filters” [where the data is coming from, i.e. database vendor name Ebsco, JSTOR etc] to import external data. Book citations from the OSU Tulsa Library catalog use the filter Endeavor Voyager. Use “Library of Congress” as generic filter for other library catalogs. |
|
Saving /
Downloading citations and references as text files:
Many databases allow citation downloads as text files. Select File / Save As in your browser and save files as text *.txt . Include the datasource in the filename (example: ebsco marketing articles.txt ). That way you can select the correct filter when importing the text file into RefWorks. |
|
Manual
entries: If you already have done your research and have your articles, still use RefWorks to help get your citation style correct. Manually enter your citations using the appropriate citation form. Go to "References", then => "Add New Reference". |
| Write ‘N Cite plug in helps in creating a works-cited page (bibliography) and internal citations for a particular citation styles. |
| Creating a Bibliography: Click on "Bibliography", check / edit Output Style. Select "Format Paper and Bibliography" by selecting a Word or Text file on your computer. or Select " Format a Bibliography from a List of References " (default) Check "References from folder ... [pull down menu] Click "Create Bibliography" |
| You might have to click "download" and "open" to see the bibliography in a new pop-up window. |
| Copy and Paste the bibliography into your Word document |
| Proofread, proofread, proofread !!! Use print style manuals and online sites to ensure proper citiations. |
