OSU-Tulsa Math Tutoring

The Learning Services Center is a quiet environment where you can work on assignments at your own pace with a qualified and experienced tutor available to answer questions and guide you. Tutors can provide assistance in such topics as linear algebra, calculus, statistics, and trigonometry.  Tutors may be able to assist in other areas as well. Please call to inquire about whether a tutor can help you with your special math needs. The LSC is equipped with TI-83, financial, and standard calculators, various OSU course textbooks, and other math reference books and handouts.

We can help you:

  • Work through practice problems
  • Review basics
  • Prepare for exams
  • Become familiar with calculator functions

How does it work?

  • Make an appointment by calling us, stopping by, or email us.
  • Bring your textbook, practice problems, or assignment so we can review what you’re working on.
  • Plan to spend about 50 minutes to one hour with a math tutor, or you can work along at your own pace with the tutor available to answer questions.

Services

Tutorials

Our one-on-one, 50 minute tutorial is one of our primary services. During the tutorial, you will meet with a trained and experienced math tutor who will assist you with your particular math needs. You can meet with the tutor for the entire 50 minutes, or you can come in and work on your problems independently with the tutor available to answer questions. If you are having difficulty, you may want to schedule multiple appointments to ensure a tutor is available for you when you need to come in.

Courses that students commonly seek help in are linear algebra, calculus, and statistics.  Our math tutors may, however, be able to help in other courses with math components.

Please be aware that it is our policy not to work problems for students but rather teach students techniques for solving problems themselves.

Emergency Calculator Loan Program

To assist students with their courses, the Learning Services Center offers a calculator checkout program where students can borrow a calculator on loan. If you wish to obtain additional information about this program, call 918-594-8232 or stop by North Hall 103 to speak with a staff member. Calculators available in this program include the TI-83 Plus (graphing), HP 10BII (financial), and TI-1706SV (standard). In order to check out one of the calculators, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Your valid OSU student ID will be held until the calculator is returned. We will not accept a driver’s license.
  2. Calculators can be checked out for a maximum of 24 hours. (If checked out on Friday, calculators may be returned on Monday).
  3. Calculators must be returned in the same condition as when they were checked out. You will be held liable for any damage to a calculator while it is in your possession.
  4. If a calculator is not returned in the allotted time, a hold will be placed on your student enrollment account until you have returned the calculator or reimbursed the Learning Services Center for the cost of the calculator.
  5. The calculator can only be checked out five times per semester.
  6. If the calculator is not returned within 24 hours, you will not be allowed to check it out again for the remainder of the semester.

How do I make an appointment?
To make a 50-minute appointment, call 918-594-8232, stop by North Hall 103, or email tulsa.lsc@okstate.edu. Because we try to serve as many people as possible, we limit appointments to one 50-minute block per visit and two visits per week.

Do I have to make an appointment or can I work on problems in the center alone until I have a question for the tutor?
Feel free to work on your assignment in our center at your own pace.  As long as a tutor is available, he or she will be happy to answer your questions as they arise.

What do I bring to the tutoring session?
Please bring your textbook, your assignment, and your calculator if you will need it. We may have a copy of your text here, and we do have calculators available for your use; but it would be best if you bring your own materials that you are familiar with.

What happens in a typical tutoring session?
In a typical tutoring session (50 minutes long), we begin by asking you to fill out a form that requests information regarding your assignment, the class, and whether you want your professor to know you are attending tutoring sessions.

Can the tutor help me prepare for my upcoming exam?
Yes, the tutor can work with you to review the concepts and work through practice problems to prepare you for an exam. You may want to schedule more than one appointment, so it’s best not to wait until the last minute.

I’m having difficulty understanding the functions of my calculator. Can a tutor explain how my calculator works?
A tutor can go through the functions of your calculator with you. Bring your textbook so the tutor can work through some problems with you while demonstrating the various functions of the calculator.

Is the Learning Services Center wheelchair accessible?
The LSC is located on the ground floor of North Hall, which has ramp entrances and an automated door.

What other resources are available in the Learning Services Center?
The LSC has a growing library of textbooks and supplemental resource books which you may use while visiting the LSC. Additionally, we offer handouts for quick reference on some math topics as well as a large variety of handouts on writing topics.  We also have graphing, financial, and standard calculators available for you to use if you forget to bring your own.

When is the Learning Services Center open?
The LSC is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours will vary during the summer semester and between semesters.  The office will be closed for university holidays. It is always best to call in advance to make sure a tutor will be available at a particular date and time.

Where is the Learning Services Center located?
The LSC is located in North Hall 103 just behind the information center.

Will my professor receive any notice that I visited the Learning Services Center for math tutoring?
The LSC does not automatically send word to your professor, but if you would like, your instructor can be notified about your visit. We will send a conference summary which describes what you and your tutor worked on during your session. The summary does not evaluate you, your instructor or your assignment in any way. It simply summarizes the areas discussed in the conference. Many students and professors appreciate this service because it facilitates more communication between them, and it keeps the professor informed of the work that the student is doing to improve his or her skills.

Resources for Instructors

In-Class Visits and Tours

We encourage instructors to contact us to schedule an in-class presentation or tour. We will introduce the Learning Services Center to your students in a short 10-15 minute in-class visit or tour of the facilities. During the tours and class visits, we will give details about the services that we offer, our hours and our basic tutoring philosophies. A Learning Services Center tour or in-class visit is a good way to encourage students to seek outside assistance and support from the start of the semester. We'll even pass out pencils and brochures to remind students to use our facilities. Please Contact Us to schedule a visit or tour.

If you would like a supply of pencils or brochures for your students, contact us, and we'll be happy to send some.

Put Us in Your Syllabus

Some instructors choose to include information about the math tutoring in their syllabus or introductory materials.

The following paragraph describes the Learning Services Center and can be pasted in your syllabus:

The OSU-Tulsa Learning Services Center is a free writing and math tutoring service available to all students on the OSU-Tulsa campus. The Learning Services Center offers 50-minute, one-on-one tutorials that can assist students with writing assignments at any phase of the writing process, including brainstorming, organization, developing support, and documenting sources. We also offer 50-minute math tutorials for topics such as statistics, linear algebra, calculus and more. Please contact the Learning Services Center to schedule an appointment. Please note that since the Learning Services Center is an instructional-based resource, tutors are not permitted to proofread or copy-edit papers or provide answers to math problems. However, they can help students develop editing and proofreading skills and teach students how to work through their own math problems to arrive at correct solutions.
