OSU-Tulsa Writing Tutoring

Does this sound familiar? You've decided to start working on the essay that your instructor assigned, but as you stare at the assignment sheet, you just can't think of how to get started. If you had someone to bounce some ideas off of, you know that you could write a great paper.

Or maybe this has happened to you... You've written and revised your paper. The organization is clear; the flow is smooth. You are about ready to wrap it up, but you're not sure if you've documented your sources correctly. Where can you go to get an APA or MLA refresher?

At the Learning Services Center, a consultant can help you start brainstorming, take a fresh look at your ideas, or give you a grammar mini-lesson. Discussing your paper with another writer is refreshing, and our tutors are ready to help.

We can help you:

  • Get started on your paper
  • Organize your ideas
  • Incorporate research
  • Document sources
  • Remember grammar and punctuation rules
  • Fine-tune your writing style and clarity
  • And much more!

How does a writing tutorial work?

  • Make an appointment by calling us, stopping by, or emailing us.
  • Bring any information about your paper, such as the assignment sheet from your instructor and any notes or drafts you've made.
  • Plan to spend about 50 minutes to one hour with the tutor. You and the consultant will discuss your concerns. The consultant will read your paper and then collaborate with you on one or two of the most significant issues in your writing. If time permits, you will have a chance to incorporate any changes into your paper before you leave.

Services

Tutorials

Our one-on-one, 50-minute tutorial is the primary service. During this tutorial, you will meet with a trained and experienced writing consultant who will read your paper and discuss ways in which you can improve your writing. You can request that we focus on an area that you are concerned with, or you can let us determine the focus. We will typically look for global issues first, such as audience awareness, organization, thesis, and development. If there is time, or if you make multiple appointments, we can also discuss sentence-level concerns, such as grammar, mechanics, word choice, etc.

We welcome papers from all university courses, including English, business, communications, nursing, and engineering - to name a few. You can bring in essays, research papers, Master's theses, dissertations, technical writing, poetry, fiction or any other writing project.

We will work with you one-on-one to help you improve your writing skills; however, there are some things we will not do:

  • We will not provide a proofreading service. However, we will be happy to help you develop your own editing and proofreading skills during a conference.
  • We will not venture a guess as to what grade a paper will receive.

Resource Library and Handouts

The Learning Services Center has a growing library of books about writing. Additionally, the most popular style manuals (APA, MLA, and Chicago) are available for reference. We also have a large collection of quick-reference handouts on topics ranging from thesis statements to documentation.

Computer Access

Computers with Microsoft Word 2003 and the Microsoft Office 2003 Suite are available for students to use for writing assignments and tasks.

How do I make an appointment?
To make a 50-minute appointment, call 918-594-8232, stop by North Hall 103, or email tulsa.lsc@okstate.edu. Because we try to serve as many people as possible, we limit appointments to one 50-minute block per visit and two visits per week.

What do I bring to a writing tutorial?
For a session, please bring:

  • Whatever writing you have done so far.
  • The assignment, including a description of the assignment from your textbook or your class notes.
  • A willingness to learn strategies that will help you become a more efficient and effective writer.
  • Your questions, even if you don't have a draft yet.

You may want to consider the following:

  • What characteristics should your paper have in order to meet the goals of the assignment?
  • Which sections of your draft are you unsure of? What questions do you have about those sections?
  • Can you outline what you have written so far? Do you have an organization in mind?
  • What comments and suggestions have been made on other papers you have written?

What happens in a typical tutoring session?
In a typical tutoring session (50 minutes long), we begin by asking you to fill out a form that requests information regarding your assignment and the class you have written it for and whether you want your professor to know you are attending tutoring sessions.

We will then begin working with you and your paper. After we have read the paper together once, we will engage you in a conversation about the paper's strengths and weaknesses. Together, we will brainstorm ideas and discuss strategies to improve on those areas that need strengthening. You can either request that we focus on an area that you are concerned with or let us determine the focus. We will typically focus on global issues first, such as audience awareness, organization, thesis, and development. If there is time, or if you make multiple appointments, we will also focus on sentence-level concerns, such as grammar, mechanics, word choice, etc.

You as a writer maintain responsibility for and control over your paper. Much of what we, the writing consultants, say is our own personal opinion, based on our own writing styles, so suggestions may be politely declined.

Who seeks tutoring assistance?
One-to-one writing conferences are not just for professional writers working with their editors. Nor are such conferences reserved for remedial writers and their tutors. Writing conferences can benefit anyone.

What kind of writing can I bring?
Writers bring papers from courses in biology, political science, communications, engineering and many other courses besides English. You can come in to work on essays, research papers, Master's theses, dissertations, technical writing, poetry, fiction, scholarship essays, graduation applications, or any other writing project from your academic or personal life.

What do the tutors not do?
We will work with you one-on-one to help you improve your writing skills; however, there are some things we will not do:

  • We will not provide a proofreading service. However, we will be happy to help you develop your own editing and proofreading skills during a conference.
  • We will not venture a guess as to what grade a paper will receive.

Should the paper I bring be saved in an electronic format?
You can bring an electronic version of your paper, but it is not necessary. We do have student computers with access to the Internet and printers.

Can I bring a handwritten paper?
Yes. Just bring in whatever you have at the time, whether it is typewritten, handwritten, or electronic.

Can I drop a paper off 15 minutes before it is due for a consultant to "look over"?
No. We do not provide a drop-off, proofreading service. In order to benefit from our services, you should schedule your appointment early enough so that you will have time to incorporate any changes into your paper before you have to turn it in.

Is the Learning Services Center wheelchair accessible?
The LSC is located on the ground floor of North Hall, which has ramp entrances and an automated door.

What software is used in the Learning Services Center?
Microsoft Word 2003 along with the entire Microsoft Office 2003 Suite (Access, PowerPoint, Excel) is available in the Writing Center. Additionally we have internet access.

What other resources are available in the Learning Services Center?
The LSC has a growing library of books about writing for students and teachers. Additionally the most popular style manuals (APA, MLA, and Chicago) are available for reference. We also have a large number of handouts for quick reference to important writing issues.

When is the Learning Services Center open?
Our hours are Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to - 7:00 pm. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Can I call, email, or fax a paper to a tutor?
At this time, tutors only provide face-to-face conferences. However, in special cases, if our schedule permits, we can accept emailed or faxed papers. Please give us a call to discuss this option.

How can I improve my writing skills?
One of the most effective methods to becoming a skilled writer is to become an avid reader. Reading gives you a better feel for how other people use words and formulate arguments.

Of course the best way to improve your writing is to do lots of it. Every paper that you write gives you more writing experience and strengthens your writing abilities. To make the most of each writing task, you should plan to revise your paper several times. This is where the tutor comes in. Think of writing as a process with many phases (idea generation, draft writing, revision, and editing - to name a few), and allow one of our tutors to be your sounding board during one or more of these phases. The benefits of "talking about writing" are vast and can accelerate your skills as a writer. Some of the best writers are those who know how to take advantage of the resources available to them.

Can tutors accommodate non-native speakers?
Yes. Every effort is made to work with non-native speakers. We have consultants who are experts in Teaching English as a Second Language.

Where is the Learning Services Center located?
The Learning Services Center is located in North Hall 103.

Will my professor receive any notice that I received tutoring assistance?
Tutors do not automatically send word to your professor, but if you would like, your instructor can be notified about your visit. We will send a conference summary which describes what you and your tutor worked on during your session. The summary does not evaluate you, your instructor or your assignment in any way. It simply summarizes the areas discussed in the conference. Many students and professors appreciate this service because it facilitates more communication between them, and it keeps the professor informed of the work that the student is doing to improve his or her writing.

What is plagiarism, and what happens if I get caught plagiarizing?
For information on plagiarism, consult OSU's Academic Dishonesty Policies and Procedures.

Resources for Instructors

In-Class Visits and Tours

We encourage instructors to contact us to schedule an in-class presentation or tour. We will introduce the Learning Services Center to your students in a short 10-15 minute in-class visit or tour of the facilities. During the tours and class visits, we will give details about the services that we offer, our hours and our basic tutoring philosophies. A Learning Services Center tour or in-class visit is a good way to encourage students to seek outside assistance and support from the start of the semester. Please contact us to schedule a visit or tour.

If you would like a supply of pencils or brochures for your students, contact us, and we'll be happy to send some.

Put Us in Your Syllabus

Some instructors choose to include information about tutoring in their syllabus or introductory materials. You may want to remind students about the Learning Services Center when you discuss your expectations for the writing they will complete in the course. Additionally, some instructors encourage students to seek assistance with their writing after reviewing and returning the first draft of the first writing assignment.

The following paragraph describes the Learning Services Center and can be pasted in your syllabus:

The OSU-Tulsa Learning Services Center is a free writing and math tutoring service available to all students on the OSU-Tulsa campus. The Learning Services Center offers 50-minute, one-on-one tutorials that can assist students with writing assignments at any phase of the writing process, including brainstorming, organization, developing support, and documenting sources. We also offer 50-minute math tutorials for topics such as statistics, linear algebra, calculus and more. Please contact the Learning Services Center to schedule an appointment. Please note that since the Learning Services Center is an instructional-based resource, tutors are not permitted to proofread or copy-edit papers or provide answers to math problems. However, they can help students develop editing and proofreading skills and teach students how to work through their own math problems to arrive at correct solutions.
