Friday, August 28, 2009Cowboy Career Month Kicks Off Sept. 8 at OSU-TulsaFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASETULSA – September is all about workshops, career development and networking opportunities during Cowboy Career Month at OSU-Tulsa.
Patti Schmigle, OSU-Tulsa Career Services coordinator, said there are numerous activities planned for students at any stage of their college career or job search.
“Our workshops, résumé sessions and career fairs are designed to help prepare students making the transition from classroom to career and OSU alumni who want to advance their career,” Schmigle said. “It’s a great opportunity for participants to freshen up their interview and communication skills, as well as network with potential employers.”
Schmigle said Career Services is offering multiple sessions of most the workshops on varying days of the week and at different times, including lunch hours and evenings, to maximize the opportunities for students and alumni to attend.
Career Month activities kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 8 with “Résumé Doctor,” a one-on-one résumé review and critique session where participants will learn how to maximize strengths and receive advice on content and formatting. Consultants will be available in North Hall 130 from noon to 7 p.m. An identical session will take place at the same time and location on Monday, Sept. 28. Consultations are by walk-in appointment only.
A one-hour career fair preparation workshop will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Tulsa Room, located next to the OSU-Tulsa Book Store. Participants will learn what to bring, how to dress and what to say to make the most of their career fair experience. Identical workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29 at noon or 5:30 p.m. Reservations are required for this workshop. To make a reservation, call 918-594-8404 or register at www.HireOSUGrads.com.
OSU students and alumni will also have two opportunities to “BOB for Jobs” this month by riding BOB, OSU’s Big Orange Bus, free of charge to attend Career Fairs at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.
OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology will host a Career Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 15 and the Business Career Fair will take place Thursday, Sept. 17. BOB reservations for both fairs should be made by calling 918-594-8404 visiting www.HireOSUGrads.com.
During mock interview sessions, students can practice their interviewing skills and learn about successful techniques and the most common employer questions asked during a job interview. Session appointments are available Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in North Hall 130. “From the Classroom to the Boardroom” is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in North Hall 130. During this workshop, participants will enjoy brunch while learning the manners and polish necessary for business functions, dinner interviews and other events. Career Month will conclude with the OSU-Tulsa Career Fair on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Hall Commons. Individuals seeking full-time jobs and internships should come professionally dressed, bring résumés and be prepared to meet potential employers.
