TULSA – Oklahoma State University’s Center for Family Risk and Resilience in Tulsa will host a seminar Wednesday to help the state’s social service agencies learn about the contemporary Mexican family.

“The Contemporary Nuclear Family in Mexico: Development, Idiosyncrasies, and Implications for Research and Practice” will take place at OSU-Tulsa from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Rosario Esteinou, a senior researcher and professor at the Center for Research and Higher Learning in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) in Mexico City. She is also a member of the Mexican Academy of Science and has done extensive research on the Mexican family with an emphasis on parenting.

Esteinou will address issues facing Mexican families, including values, dynamics and gender roles; rural versus urban structure and dynamics; the effects of immigration; and the cultural differences in Mexican and American parenting styles.

The event is sponsored by the OSU Center for Family Risk and Resilience, the Tulsa Hispanic Resource Association and the Latino Community Development Agency. The OSU Center for Family Risk and Resilience at OSU-Tulsa partners OSU researchers with local social service agencies to tackle problems and find solutions for issues in the community.
