Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers to present 'The Help' author with Homecoming Award

StockettThe Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa will honor Kathryn Stockett, best-selling author of “The Help,” with the Homecoming Award at a special event on March 27 in the Chapman Music Hall at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

“Kathryn Stockett’s bestseller, ‘The Help’ is more than just one of the most popular novels of our time,” said Teresa Miller, executive director of the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers. “It challenges us to think beyond the boundaries of our own lives, to consider what it might be like to live as someone else, someone surrounded by injustice, but empowered by a basic humanity."

The Homecoming Award is presented to writers originally from the South and Southwestern U.S. who have distinguished the region through their writing. A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Stockett’s novel reflects her own experience of growing up in a household with African-American domestic workers. “The Help” has sold more than 10 million copies and was listed for 100 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List after its release in 2008. An Academy Award-nominated film adaptation of Stockett’s novel, starring Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone, was released in 2011.

Previous recipients of the Homecoming Award include S.E. Hinton, Pat Conroy, Tracy Letts, N. Scott Momaday, May Angelou, Jim Lehrer, Doug Marlette, Sue Monk Kidd, Kay Gibbons, Beth Henley, Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey and Tony Hillerman.

The award will be presented during “An Evening with Kathryn Stockett,” which will feature a discussion with the author on her debut novel, as well as a question and answer session. The event is hosted in conjunction with Tulsa Reads, a community-wide reading initiative sponsored by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at OSU-Tulsa, the Tulsa City-County Library System, Tulsa Town Hall and the Tulsa World.

Tickets for “An Evening with Kathryn Stockett” are $10 plus handling charges and should be purchased in advance at myticketoffice.com or 918-596-7111. Discounted tickets are available for students and teachers. For more information, contact Miller at 918-594-8215.
