Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers to host Alexander McCall Smith on Tuesday

Alexander McCall SmithThe Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at OSU-Tulsa will host best-selling author and humanitarian Alexander McCall Smith at 7 p.m. in the OSU-Tulsa auditorium. The sold-out event is part of the Tulsa Reads program, a partnership between the Center, Tulsa Town Hall, Tulsa City-County Library and the Tulsa World.

Teresa Miller, executive director of the Center, said McCall Smith was chosen for the annual event based on his ability to tackle challenging issues in his works in a delightful and uplifting way.

McCall Smith has a large body of work, including the best-selling series “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency,” children’s books and scholarly books on medical ethics and criminal law. The talk will also include a question and answer session followed by a book signing.

While tickets to Tuesday’s event are no longer available, the Center has a number of upcoming events. Best-selling memoirist Wade Rouse will host a writing workshop on April 26 from 1-4 p.m. at OSU-Tulsa. On Sept. 28, the Center will host a special one-day festival, Oklahoma Legends, that will feature some of Oklahoma’s most famous writers. Tulsa Reads will host legendary author Pat Conroy on Sept. 20 and iconic author Margaret Atwood on April 3, 2013. For updates, visit the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers website.

Cowboy Family Roundup brings together faculty, staff from OSU in Tulsa

Cowboy Family RoundupThe OSU in Tulsa Staff Advisory Council will host the Cowboy Family Roundup on Friday, April 20 in the OSU-Tulsa Main Hall Commons for faculty and staff.

The event is an opportunity for employees from OSU-Tulsa and OSU Center for Health Sciences to learn more about each campus and get to know the faculty and staff. Attendees will be able to take a tour of OSU-Tulsa and visit Another Hot Oklahoma Night: A Rock and Roll Exhibit.

Attendees will be treated to a complimentary lunch from Baxter's Interurban Grill and may participate in games like office chair shuffle, trash can basketball shootout and shoe kick contest. Dr. Kayse Shrum, OSU-CHS provost, and Dr. Ron Bussert, OSU-Tulsa vice president for administration and finance, will team up against Dr. Raj Basu, OSU-Tulsa vice president for academic affairs, and Dr. Jim Hess, OSU-CHS chief operating officer, for a tricycle relay competition.

Faculty and staff planning on attending the event are asked to RSVP by Monday, April 16.

Tulsa Drillers home opener tonight, heavy traffic expected around campus

The Tulsa Drillers open the 2012 regular season at ONEOK Field tonight against the San Antonio Missions at 7:05 p.m. The evening will kick off with the Opening Night Parade at 6:15 p.m. beginning at the OETA studio adjacent to parking lot A.

Crowds of 6,500 people are expected to attend the pre-game parade and traffic around campus will be heavy. Students are asked to schedule extra time to find parking when coming to class or to catch BOB, the Big Orange Bus, for the ride to Stillwater.

Drillers fans are permitted to park at OSU-Tulsa for Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday games.

Tickets available for Bedlam Baseball, Tailgate Party

Tickets are still available for Bedlam Baseball on Friday, May 4 at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa. The cost is $31 and includes entrance into the tailgate, barbecue dinner and a reserved seat in the OSU section at the game.

The tailgate begins at 5:30 p.m. with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Free parking is available at OSU-Tulsa.

Complimentary tickets available for Philbrook's MIX

The Mix logoAre you in the MIX? OSU-Tulsa students, faculty and staff can pick up free tickets for the Philbrook's MIX event at the Information Center in the North Hall Lobby.

The event starts at 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 in the BOK Parking Lot at the corner of Archer and Detroit. The fundraising event is celebrating the impending opening of the Philbrook's satellite location in downtown Tulsa.

Tickets are limited to one pair per person and quantities are limited. You must show your OSU ID to the receptionist to receive tickets.
