Vilnius and Trakai Pictures

 

These photos were taken on two trips to Vilnius, Lithuania in June 1997 and April 1998.

  • The original fortress which founded Vilnius, Lithuania, built in the early 1300s. It was built by (King) Gediminas and sits atop a hill named for him in the center of Vilnius. Gediminas is considered the founder of the city of Vilnius.

  • This is another part of Gediminas fortress atop the hill. The walls were massive and were being reconstructed while we were there.

  • Jurgis and Ausrine Seckus with the original fortress and the statue of Gediminas in the background. They are the Directors of Youth at the CrossRoads in Lithuania.

  • St. Ann's Cathedral in Vilnius, built in the early 1400s. Napoleon is reported to have liked St. Ann's so much that he considered having it moved brick by brick back to France.

  • This is a typical street in the beautiful Old Town part of Vilnius. This street is named Gedimino after the founder of the city.

  • Trakai, a castle/fortress in a lake outside of Vilnius, built in about 1352. For more information about Trakai visit the following websites below the text.

  • This picture is of the courtyard of Trakai taken just inside the walls. The drawbridge below is up the steps in the center. It is  two pictures put together to give a more panoramic effect.

  • This drawbridge protected the inner part of Trakai. They didn't get the draw bridge up quickly enough to keep out all the "bad guys."

  • On the way home I got to spend a night in Frankfort, Germany. The fountain was in the part of Frankfort I got to explore.
