TPS teachers tour the Helmerich Research Center

TPS teachers tour HRC

Tulsa Public Schools teachers tour a lab at the Helmerich Research Center.

The OSU-Tulsa Helmerich Research Center and Tulsa Public Schools have partnered to increase interest in engineering careers among Tulsa’s youth. As part of the ongoing effort, a group of 17 TPS teachers toured the HRC and met with faculty and student researchers last week during a professional development session.

Dr. Raj Singh, Williams Companies Distinguished Chair in Energy Technology, hosted the group and introduced the teachers to OSU-Tulsa’s materials science and engineering research. The group toured his lab with Dr. Nirmal Govindaraju and students, as well as those of Dr. Raman Singh, Dr. Ranji Vaidyanathan and Dr. Pankaj Sarin. They also visited the Advanced Materials Characterization Center and the HRC’s core labs and clean room with Zach Carpenter, lab manager.

Since joining the OSU-Tulsa faculty as head of the School of Materials Science and Engineering in 2012, Singh has worked to promote careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. HRC faculty host tours and work with high school students and teachers in the Tulsa area to build interest in engineering careers.
