Oklahoma State University-Tulsa will begin offering this spring a new graduate certificate in human resource management, the only such certificate available at any public college or university in the state.
“The graduate certificate program fills a need for business professionals to receive advanced training in human resource management,” said OSU-Tulsa President Howard Barnett. “By offering this training, we are empowering organizational leaders with the knowledge and skills to be successful in this essential business sphere.”
Students pursuing this graduate-level credential in human resource management can complete the program in a year on the Tulsa campus. Human resources professionals and those interested in a career in the human resources field will learn from OSU Spears School of Business faculty and invited professionals from around the region.
“In today’s competitive business environment, it is imperative that professionals have an advantage by gaining and expanding knowledge and skills,” said Dr. Evan Davis, director of human resource management programs and clinical assistant professor of management. “Course work is focused on practical application and organizational practice. Professors utilize case studies, company data and group projects to connect concepts and theories directly to the practice of human resource management.”
The certificate is a total of 15 credit hours with courses in talent development, talent acquisition, total rewards, human resource analytics and employment law. Deemed a “gateway to an MBA,” the certificate course credits are transferable to or may be earned concurrently for associated OSU graduate programs such as the Master of Business Administration or other master’s programs within OSU and the Spears School of Business.
“Students in the program will receive the high quality graduate education that is synonymous with OSU and the Spears School of Business,” said Dr. Ken Eastman, dean of the Spears School of Business. “The program will maintain active cooperative relationships with Oklahoma employers and we will seek to involve a variety of professionals as guest speakers and student mentors. These relationships will provide opportunities for meaningful research in the human resource field.”
The graduate certificate is designed to complement the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) competency model. These competencies provide a foundation for talent management throughout the HR lifecycle. The program focuses on competencies such as: communication, ethical practice, HR expertise and critical evaluation deemed important by SHRM for performance and career advancement.
Students will be encouraged to take the SHRM Assurance of Learn Assessment or Human Resource Certification Institute certification exams. The appropriate examination would be determined for each student based on professional goals.
The only admissions requirement for applicants is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university. Applicants are not required to take the GMAT, GRE or any other entrance exams for the graduate certificate program.
